Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie “Carol Davila” (UMFCD) is the largest and one of the oldest medical schools in Romania. The clinical departments of UMFCD are located in more than 20 university hospitals in Bucharest. All the 167 departments are involved in basic and clinical research. UMFCD participated in 9 European Research projects accounting for 200 million Euro, developing a specific expertise in the management of European projects.

The present work will be carried out in the UMFCD’s university hospitals with Cardiology and Internal medicine departments with an important expertise in clinical research in atrial fibrillation, complex comorbidity population, older and frail population. The present team leader coordinated the first national registry on atrial fibrillation which included more than 3.000 patients followed-up over 1 year in 30 national centers. Also, UMFCD departments which are involved in the present proposal are participating in the Eurobservational Research Programme of the ESC both as coordinator and as participant centers.

The scientists involved in AFFIRMO have extensive expertise in conducting large longitudinal observational studies, in clinical research in atrial fibrillation and international project management.

Prof. Gheorghe-Andrei Dan

Professor at UMFCD, team leader. He is a medical doctor and professor of cardiology and internal medicine and heads the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology of University Hospital Colentina – UMFCD. Prof. Dan has prominent expertise in the field of atrial fibrillation, registries, clinical trials, as a project manager for the FACTS program (Atrial Fibrillation-Awareness, Consciousness and Therapeutic Strategy) started in 2010, and as a member of the steering committee of multiple registries on atrial fibrillation of the Eurobservational Research Programme of the ESC. He has an H-index of 25, based on more than 150 publications and almost 3,000 citations.

Dr. Anca Rodica Dan

MD, PhD, team member. Dr. Anca Dan holds a degree in medicine, a PhD in cardiology, is a senior cardiologist and researcher. She was a team member in FACTS registry and in the Eurobservational Research Programme on atrial fibrillation. Since 2010 she is the head of the syncope unit and her main scientific interest is the study of the elderly population with syncope. Her H-index is 6 based on almost 100 articles and 150 citations.

Assist. Prof. Raluca Popescu

Assistant professor at UMFCD, team member. She holds a medical degree and a PhD in cardiology, and she is a senior cardiologist. She was coordinator in FACTS registry and in the Eurobservational Research Programme on atrial fibrillation. She is studying atrial fibrillation in the elderly with comorbidities. Her H-index is 6 based on almost 100 articles and 200 citations.

Assist.Prof. Catalin Adrian Buzea

Assistant professor at UMFCD, team member. He holds a medical degree and a PhD in cardiology. He is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. He co-supervised more than 20 graduated students. He was a team member in FACTS registry and in the Eurobservational Research Programme on atrial fibrillation. He received the Prize for excellence for his post-doctoral research on cardiac involvement in pulmonary diseases. His H-index is 4 based on almost 100 articles and 100 citations.

Assoc. Prof. Elisabeta Badila

Associate professor at UMFCD. She holds a medical degree and a PhD in cardiology. Dr. Badila is a senior cardiologist and a senior physician in internal medicine. She was Principal Investigator in 2 national research grants and co-participated in other 3 national research grants. Her research focus is on multiethnicity and multimorbidity in hypertension. She supervised more than 50 graduated students. His H-index is 13 based on almost 200 articles and 1500 citations.
