i~HD is a not-for-profit institute registered in Belgium. It is a membership-based organization with members from pharma, healthcare providers, academic organizations, and works closely with patient organizations, healthcare payers, the health ICT sector and standards development organizations. i~HD develops methods, solutions and services that can maximize multi-stakeholder value obtained from health data, to support innovations in health, health care and knowledge discovery, while ensuring compliance with privacy protection. It tackles areas of challenge in the successful scaling up of innovations that rely on high quality and interoperable health data. Its activities include a Network of Excellence for healthcare providers, data quality assessment and improvement support, promoting codes of practice and expertise in sustainability and business modelling. i~HD has staff with experience of leading or being a partner in over 80 EU projects.

i~HD personnel bring longstanding expertise in electronic health record data, its representation and interoperability, and its roles in supporting patient care, patient empowerment and its reuse within the learning health system. They have experience of designing and implementing health ICT innovations, and in piloting their suitability and usability in diverse kinds of European pilot site. They bring state-of-the-art expertise and information governance including GDPR compliance, data quality assessment and formalised assessments of the quality and trustworthiness of ICT innovations.

Key persons

Prof. Dipak Kalra

President of i~HD. Former clinical professor of Health Informatics at University College London. He has led multiple EC and IMI projects, and ISO standards development, in EHR interoperability standards, data protection, business models and the reuse of EHRs in clinical research. His current projects include the generation of real-world evidence in pregnancy, the governance of patient-centric clinical trials, the readiness of hospitals for value-based care, and advising on success factors for the European Health Data Space.

Dr. Nathan Lea

i~HD GDPR Task Force lead. Dr. Lea works in i~HD to develop adaptive codes of practice and standard operating procedures to govern and secure the use of health and genetic data for research purposes and digital health innovation. He has focused his work on operational security and design implementation. He is interested in understanding the legal, ethical and societal impacts and concerns around novel health data uses, particularly in Artificial Intelligence for health management and genomics research.

Mr Peter Singleton

i~HD GDPR Expert. Mr. Singleton leads the GDPR compliance and information governance work plan for some of i~HD’s research projects in Horizon 2020 and IMI. He is Director of Cambridge Health Informatics Limited and has been a Senior Associate at the Judge Institute of Management, University of Cambridge. His research interests are in the field of electronic health records; privacy and confidentiality, patient involvement, ethical issues, effective use of information within healthcare; value-chain improvements; market-entry strategies; and business models and efficiencies that are particularly IT-related.

Ms Hannelore Aerts

i~HD Data Quality lead. Ms. Aerts obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and a PhD at the Department of Data Analysis, studying novel methods for personalized medicine in brain tumor patients. She has experience in project management, interdisciplinary collaboration, statistical data analysis and communication. Hannelore coordinates several projects at i~HD, including study design and data quality assessment.
