Medical University – Plovdiv, Bulgaria is a public institution of higher education accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency. It provides training of students in Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Public health as well as postgraduate training of PhD students and specializing medical professionals in Medical College of the University.

Medical University - Plovdiv is a member of the European Association of Medical Schools. It is a bearer of the Erasmus University Charter ensuring participation in international educational projects and programs of the European Union to guarantee quality training and student and teacher mobility for integration into the European structures. Research activities in Medical University-Plovdiv are synchronized with priority research areas of national and international importance.

The present work will be carried out at the Ist Department of Internal Diseases, Section Cardiology. The scientists involved form a multidisciplinary team with expertise in cardiology, neurology, public health. Mariya Tokmakova will be a national coordinator within WP7, cluster RT. The team will form a national coordinator centre and contribute for the specific objectives of the WP7, cluster RT and coordination among the participating clusters (centres) at a national level.

Specialist in internal diseases and cardiology. Associate Professor at the Medical University Plovdiv (Bulgaria, 2008-present). Head of cardiology section at the Clinic of cardiology, University Hospital “Sv. Georgi” EAD, Plovdiv. One year Research Fellowship at the Division of Cardiology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston (USA, 2002). Two years postgraduate course in Heart Failure, University of Zurich (Switzerland). Member of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology, Bulgarian Society of Interventional Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology, Heart Failure Association of ESC, American College of Cardiology, FESC, FACC. President of Bulgarian Society of Cardiology (2018-2020). Chief-coordinator of the Expert Council in Cardiology at the Ministry of Health. 56 publications and more than 400 citations. H-index 11.

Prof. Penka Atanassova Atanassova

Specialist in neurology (2000). Professor at the Department of Neurology, Medical University Plovdiv (Bulgaria, 2017-present). Head of Clinic of Neurology, University Hospital “Sv. Georgi” EAD, Plovdiv. Postgraduate courses in Uppsala (Sweden), Bordeaux (France), Sevilla (Spain). Successfully completed 6 university and 3 international scientific projects; supervisor of 3 dissertations. 6 monographs; 115 publications; more than 300 citations, with a H-index of 7. Member of Bulgarian Society of Neurology, Member of the Board of Directors of Bulgarian Association of Clinical Electrophysiology, member of the EAN Scientific Pannel, member of the Expert Council in Neurology at the Ministry of Health. The main scientific interest and activity is focused in patients with stroke, cognitive disorders, cerebrovascular risk factors, functional MRI.

Dr. Angel Mario Dzhambov

PhD (2017) in Preventive medicine (Hygiene) and DSc (2019) degree in Psychiatry. Senior Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Public Health, Medical University of Plovdiv. He conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of environmental/occupational health, non-communicable disease epidemiology, and the social sciences, emphasising quantitative methods. Dr. Dzhambov has co-authored more than 50 A1 publications and has been cited over 550 times (Scopus), with an h-index of 11 (source: Scopus, Web of Science). He is on the editorial board of the Noise & Health journal. As of 2020, he is a collaborator on the Horizon 2020-funded project Equal-Life (project ID: 874724) and an expert for the WHO/ILO joint methodology for estimating the work-related burden of disease and injury (2019-2020).
