The Aging Research Center (ARC), established in 2000 by Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Stockholm University (SU), is internationally renowned for its research on the health status of older adults, trends and inequality among older people, brain aging, and prevention of dementia. Research conducted at ARC is based on data from several large-scale ongoing and completed longitudinal studies (local, national and international), national registers, and from experimental and intervention studies conducted on a smaller scale.

KI, where ARC is located, is one of the world’s foremost medical universities. Research at KI spans the entire medical field, from basic experimental research to patient-oriented and nursing research. It is Sweden’s single largest centre of medical academic research and offers the country’s widest range of medical courses and programmes. KI has collaboration agreements in research and education with a large number of universities the world over, with companies in the biomed and biotech sectors and also with individual countries.

The scientists involved in AFFIRMO make up a multidisciplinary team that will bring to the project its expertise is geriatric medicine, epidemiology of aging, neuroepidemiology, clinical pharmacology, and biostatistics. The group has an extensive experience in running observational studies, based on longitudinal population-based data, in the field of multimorbidity, geriatric syndromes, frailty, dementia, cardiovascular risk factors and quality of pharmacological prescription. The group will lead WP3 and will contribute to accomplish the specific objectives planned in WP3 and WP4.

Key persons

Dr Davide L Vetrano

Postdoctoral fellow at ARC. Medical doctor specialized in geriatric medicine at the Catholic University of Rome, holding a PhD in geriatric epidemiology from KI. Strong clinical background with experience in managing complex geriatric patients in different clinical settings. He is applicant and co-applicant of several funded projects and is a member of several consortia working on multimorbidity, frailty, and polypharmacy. Dr. Vetrano is also supervisor and co-supervisor of several postgraduate and PhD students. He has an H index of 16 (source: Web of Science), a mean number of citations per article of 10, and a total number of 1,000 citations corresponding to more than 100 articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Assist Prof Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga

Assistant professor at ARC. Degree in Pharmacy, Master's in Public Health, PhD from the Department of Public Health, University of Zaragoza. She investigated the epidemiology of multimorbidity and its impact on health systems and patients at the Aragon Health Sciences Institute (IACS) in Spain. At ARC, she studied health in older age, shifting from focusing on single diseases towards multidimensional and longitudinal health trajectories. She was involved in two randomized cluster trials in young-old patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy to improve drug prescription in primary care (Multi-PAP and Multi-PAP Plus). H index of 19 (source: Web of Science), with a mean number of citations per article of 18, and a total number of 1,170 citations corresponding to 74 scientific publications.

Prof Laura Fratiglioni

Medical doctor and neurologist, PhD in epidemiology from KI. Senior Professor at ARC and current PI of SNAC-K and of the Swedish National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR). World-leading scientist in the field of aging research and epidemiology of dementia and multimorbidity. She has been an applicant and co-applicant of numerous projects granted by European and Swedish funding bodies. She supervised more than 15 PhD students and co-supervised more than 30 graduate and PhD students during her career. She received several prizes and awards, among which the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Alzheimer’s Association and the Karolinska Institutet Grand Silver Medal. H index of 93 (source: Web of Science), with a mean number of citations per article of 78, and 39,000 citations corresponding to more than 500 scientific publications.

Assist Prof Chengxuan Qiu

Associate Professor and Senior University Lecturer in Epidemiology at Karolinka Institutet (KI), Vice Head of Aging Research Center and Co-Chair of Center for Alzheimer’s Research at KI. Dr. Medical degree, Master’s degree in public health, and PhD degree in geriatric epidemiology from KI. His research covers a broad range of issues related to health in aging, especially brain ageing and dementia, with several well-established population-based projects: the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K); the SNAC-K MRI Study; the Icelandic AGES-Reykjavik Study; the Confucius Hometown Aging Project. At Shandong University in China, he initiated the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China. H-index of 38, and over 5,600 citations corresponding to 135 scientific publications.
